Marvel series attract 100 million movie-goers in S. Korea

The number of movie-goers in South Korea that went to see Marvel movies reached a cumulative total of 100 million this week, setting an unprecedented record for a single production franchise brand.

According to Walt Disney Company Korea, local distributor of Marvel movies, on Thursday, superhero film ¡°Ant-Man and The Wasp¡± attracted 4.64 million viewers as of Wednesday, leading the total cumulative number of audiences for Marvel series to reach 100 million.

Ever since Marvel Studios released ¡°Iron Man¡± in Korea in 2008, the production company has released a total 20 movies in the country over 10 years. ¡°Avengers: Infinity War (2018)¡± and ¡°Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)¡± each attracted more than 10 million viewers in Korea, followed by ¡°Iron Man 3 (2013)¡± 9 million, ¡°Captain America: Civil War (2016)¡± 8.6 million, ¡°Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)¡± 7.2 million, and ¡°The Avengers (2012)¡± more than 7 million. ¡°Doctor Strange (2016)¡±, ¡°Black Panther (2018)¡±, and ¡°Thor: Ragnarok (2017)¡± also attracted a combined 5 million viewers.

Marvel movies are estimated to have raised a total worldwide box office revenue of $17.2 billion. In Korea, its latest production ¡°Ant-Man and The Wasp¡± has already attracted more viewers than its prequel Ant-Man after seven days of release. On the tenth day of ¡°Ant-Man and The Wasp¡± release, the film, together with this year¡¯s ¡°Black Panther¡± and ¡°Avengers: Infinity War¡± collected an annual record of 20 million admissions in Korea.
