President Moon names new unification, ICT, gender ministers

South Korea¡¯s new President Moon Jae-in nominated Cho Myoung-gyon, former director general for Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation, as the unification minister and You Young-min, software expert, as the minister for Science, ICT, and Future Planning.

Cho served as the head of the Kaesong Industrial Complex business support team and director general of the Office of Planning for Light Water Reactor at the Ministry of Unification, and also a security advisory secretary to former President Roh Moo-hyun.

¡°We expect Cho to competently deal with the challenges such as realizing denuclearization and lasting peace at the peninsula, shaping the outline for inter-Korean relationship under the new administration and vision for an inter-Korean economic bloc,¡± said the presidential office.

You Young-min, former director of the Posco Research Institute, started his career as a software engineer and headed Korea Software Industry Promotion Agency and Korea Data Agency. You is the right candidate to usher the country into the digital age of fourth industrial revolution, the office said.

Kim Yung-rok, former Democratic Party lawmaker and deputy governor of South Jeolla Province, was appointed as the minister of agriculture, food and rural affairs. He has been on the National Assembly¡¯s agricultural committee member for six years.

Chung Hyun-back, professor of history at Sungkyunkwan University, was tapped to lead the ministry of gender equality and family. Chung has been active in women¡¯s and civil rights movement.
