LG Innotek Co., materials and component making unit of South Korean conglomerate LG Group, said Thursday that it has developed ¡®advanced flip-chip light emitting diode (LED) package with high lighting efficiency and cost halved against its competitors. The new type of LED package will be mass-produced from this month.

Advanced flip-chip LED package is a LED light source that is directly attached to a printed circuit board (PCB) substrate without using a connection wire.

LG Innotek¡¯s new flip-chip LED package produces high efficiency of 220 lumens per watt (lm/W) stably even at a temperature of between 250 and 300 degrees Celsius, according to the company. It said the product is a result of nearly two years of research and 6,000 hours of intensive testing time.

Moreover, the premium flip-chip LED package costs only half the price of the product in the same category, which places it competitive against cheap Chinese rivals, said the company.

The company has 65 patents filed for related technology and plans to expand the flip-chip LED package technology to other lighting applications such as automotive lights and micro-LED displays.

At 2:25 p.m. Friday, shares of LG Innotek were down 5.4 percent at 132,500 won ($124.35).
