SK Telecom, South Korea`s top mobile carrier, said Wednesday that it has joined a global mapping consortium with three regional partners to make a high-definition map for self-driving vehicles and location-based service providers.
The OneMap Alliance, which also includes HERE Technologies of the Netherlands, NavInfo of China and Pioneer of Japan, will make a standardized HD map of North America, Europe and Asia by 2020, according to SK Telecom.
To meet their roadmap goals, SK Telecom will supply its 5G and mobile navigation technology and T-map real-time traffic information, while HERE Technologies will provide HD map solutions and technology standards, and NavInfo and Pioneer will share their respective HD maps of China and Japan.
The alliance also aims to apply a real-time map update solution to the HD map, allowing a dynamic digital representation of the road environment detected by an autonomous vehicle to be reflected on the map.
Unlike existing digital maps, the HD map enables precision positioning to the unit of centimeters and visualizes detailed lanes, objects in the perimeter of a self-driving car and traffic signal data.
As the HD map from the OneMap Alliance could be available in most regions of the world, automakers don¡¯t need to purchase additional maps for certain countries or regions.
SK Telecom said the 5G technology for real-time data sharing and the HD map for path decision are at the heart of autonomous driving and it will offer comprehensive car control and smart city services in connection with the HD map.
