DSME to develop smart ship infrastructure system with Intel, Naver

South Korea¡¯s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) has joined hands with Intel Korea, U.S.-based Intel¡¯s Korean operation, and Naver Business Platform Corp. (NBP) to build a smart ship infrastructure that will allow vessels operate autonomously and remotely. According to DSME on Monday, it has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Intel and Naver to jointly develop a cloud-based smart ship system that will mainly collect data on a real-time basis using cloud and Internet of Things technologies.

Data collected through the system will be transferred to a main vessel control center on land in real time to enable remote operations of vessels by the control center. It is similar to connected car technology in which a vehicle is constantly connected to cloud technology for autonomous driving.

Along with drone and self-driving car technologies, remote and autonomous vessel technology is also gaining great attention from the ship and shipping industry these days.

An unnamed official from DSME expected that the new technology would significantly improve efficiency in vessel operations thanks to a control center¡¯s remote, real-time operations of vessels. With this system, a control center would be able to navigate safer routes for a vessel after analyzing weather condition data in real time. The system would also reduce labor costs as it is expected to replace some jobs that are currently done by vessel operators in a ship, the official added.

DSME will use NBP¡¯s cloud platform and adopt Intel¡¯s IoT solution to establish an infrastructure system inside the ship.

DSME, NBP, and Intel also plan to establish a ship IoT (SIoT) cluster - a technology ecosystem for partnership with local small- and mid-size companies. SIoT cluster aims to develop indigenous technologies and services for smart vessels in hopes of enhancing the country¡¯s shipbuilding industry¡¯s global information and communications technology (ICT) competitiveness.
