Hyundai Rotem wins $38 mn diesel-electric train deal in Bangladesh

South Korea¡¯s Hyundai Rotem Co., the locomotive and rolling stock unit of Hyundai Motor Group, said Friday it has won a 41 billion won ($37.9 million) order to supply 10 diesel-electric train units to Bangladesh Railway.

Diesel multiple units powered by on-board diesel engines will be produced at the company¡¯s plant in Changwon, South Gyeonsang Province in Korea, for delivery by 2020.

The trains will be deployed to the route between the capital city of Dhaka and Chittagong for passenger and freight transportation.

Hyundai Rotem¡¯s DMU has been upgraded with 565 horsepower in technological cooperation with U.S. diesel-electric locomotive engine maker Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD). It won the deal in competition with rivals from China and Spain, according to the company.

Hyundai Rotem¡¯s train supplies to Bangladesh would reach 343 cars with its products making up 17 percent of diesel-electric trains in the country and 23 percent of overall railway system.

Hyundai Rotem shares finished 4.84 percent higher at 36,800 won on Friday.
