South Korea maintained its top position in the global new ship order scoreboard in September after beating China in August. The country’s global ship order backlog also rose from the previous month for the first time in 23 months.
According to data released by U.K.-based shipping data provider Clarkson Research Services on Wednesday, Korean shipbuilders secured the largest orders worth 1.46 million compensated gross tons (CGTs) or 26 ships in September, followed by China with orders worth 890,000 CGT or 21 ships and Japan with orders worth 260,000 CGT or 12 vessels. The data also found that local shipbuilders obtained 11 orders for very large container carriers (six for Samsung Heavy Industries Co. and five for Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. or DSME), 10 very large ore carriers (Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.) and five very large crude carriers (DSME).
China is still the world’s No.1 based on cumulative new orders from January to September this year with new orders worth 5.09 million CGT or 217 ships, trailed by Korea with 133 ships worth 5.04 million CGT. Japan clinched orders for 76 ships worth 1.47 million CGT over the same period.
Global new vessel orders amounted to 2.96 million CGT or 71 ships last month, the largest volume since the beginning of the year. Cumulative orders in the January to September period increased 63 percent to 15.93 million CGT or 573 vessels, from 9.79 million CGT or 438 ships in the same period last year.
According to the data, global ship order backlog rose from the previous month for the first time in 22 months since November 2015, up from 74.59 million CGT as of late August to 75.11 million CGT in September.
The order backlog for Korean shipbuilders also rose to 16.65 million CGT last month from 15.96 million CGT in August, the first on-month gain since October 2015.
By country, China recorded the biggest order backlog of 25.9 million CGT, followed by Korea and Japan with 16.08 million CGT.
