Samsung Research, the exploratory R&D unit of Samsung Electronics, has ranked first in two of the world’s biggest challenges for artificial intelligence (AI) machine reading comprehension.

According to Samsung Electronics on Monday, Samsung Research recently placed first in MAchine Reading COmprehension (MARCO) Competition held by Microsoft, and in TriviaQA hosted by the University of Washington.

MARCO and TriviaQA are among the world’s five best known AI machine reading comprehension competitions, where distinguished universities around the world and global AI companies are competing to prove the excellence of their AI algorithm.

In machine reading comprehension, AI algorithms are tested in their capabilities of analyzing and processing various types of documents such as news articles and blog posts and finding an optimum answer to randomized questions.

In the recent two competitions, Samsung Research used ConZNet, an AI algorithm developed by its AI center with an advanced reinforcement learning technique, which was used for Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo.

In March, the Beijing branch of Samsung Research won the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) hosted by the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR), proving its unparalleled computer vision technology.
