South Korea’s mobile carrier LG Uplus Corp. said Wednesday it has agreed with Nokia to join hands in developing the fifth-generation network digital unit (DU) equipment, which is set to emerge as the new industrial standard.

The equipment will use Nokia`s breakthrough ReefShark chipset that helps the 5G network deliver more data while reducing the size, cost and power consumption of related network equipment.

The chipset used in 5G DUs allows the deployment of more active antenna units (AAUs) connected to DUs, leading to a 10-fold increase in data processing performance.

The RFIC chipset applied to AAUs can cut down the size of massive MIMO antennas, while achieving a 64 percent reduction in the power consumption of baseband units, according to LG Uplus.

Adding artificial intelligence to this chipset enables machine learning-enabled beamforming technologies that allow networks to follow mobile devices, extend the cell range and provide massive capacity wherever it is needed.

The Korean company is planning to build the 5G network based on DUs equipped with the chipset on schedule to commercialize the 5G network next year.
