Samsung SDI Co., South Korea¡¯s electric vehicle and smartphone battery manufacturer, will unveil a slew of its new battery technologies at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show to be held from September 12 to 24.

The company said on Tuesday in a press statement that it will introduce Multifunctional Battery Pack that allows a car manufacturer to adjust the number of modules at the auto show. With this technology, a car maker can choose to design a 20-module pack for a premium electric vehicle that can drive 600 to 700 kilometers or 10 to 12 modules for a regular sedan that can go about 300 kilometers.

It also presented Low Height Cell, which is about 20 percent shorter in height than currently available cells. The company expected this technology would allow car makers to have more freedom in designing electric vehicles with more room inside a car.

The Korean battery maker also unveiled cells and modules of 21700, the new battery standard of cylindrical batteries. A 21700 battery with a diameter of 21 millimeters (mm) and height of 70mm has improved capacity by 50 percent compared with the existing 18650 with a diameter of 18mm and height of 65mm. The company said its size is optimized for maximizing capacity, life and output, but it comes at a more affordable tag than its competitors. The battery can be used in an electric vehicle, energy storage system, and electrically-drive tool and is expected to set a new standard for cylindrical batteries, according to the company.

¡°Our products unveiled at the show are expected to advance the popularization of EVs,¡± said Samsung SDI President Jun Young-hyun.
