IriTech Inc., a South Korean supplier of iris-based biometrics software and hardware solutions, has developed an advanced technology to capture and recognize iris pattern images even from glasses wearers or side-angle views.

The so-called side-gazing technology was designed to address the current barrier pertaining to iris recognition often disturbed by strong light reflection or skew angles.

“The new system is able to recognize iris and facial patterns at the same time and captures iris images at up to 25 degree angle up/down and right/left,” said IriTech CEO Kim Dae-hoon.

“People have different patterns in opening or closing eyes and this means the iris is not always recognized as a perfect sphere by a machine. But the new software can break up the iris image into several parts and recognize each pattern,” Kim explained.

The 17-year-old small company has been well known in the global biometrics market. The company took the top spot in a test to measure iris recognition accuracy conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology in 2010. It was chosen as an iris recognition software supplier to the U.S. Department of Defense in 2013 and to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in 2016.
