South Korea’s LG Innotek Co. announced on Wednesday it has successfully developed the world’s first second-generation Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) fully integrated module for use in connected and self-driving cars.

V2X communication is the exchange of information from a vehicle to any entity that may affect the vehicle, and vice versa.

Such information exchange is driven by a V2X module. The latest technology is ready for commercial use with advanced wireless capability, and the new module is more durable and compact than its predecessor.

Three key V2X components (HCI module to control communication protocol, hardware security module to block hacking and application processor) are fully integrated into the second-generation module, leading to improvement in communication, safety and product reliability in car connectivity, the company said.

For durability, the company’s proprietary heat-resistant design was applied to allow the device to work properly at high temperature of 105 degrees Celsius. The temperature inside a car can rise to near 100 in summer.

The module with a dimension of 40 x 35 x 4 mm is just one third of a credit card and causes no spatial restriction in the car.

Test results showed the device reached a transmission power of 23㏈m and a reception sensitivity of -94㏈m at a communication speed of 6Mbps. This means communication signals remain connected within a 1km distance while the car runs at a speed of 120㎞/h.
