South Korea’s leading Internet company Naver Corp. showed off a Level 3 self-driving car with a person at the driver’s seat for emergency backup at the Seoul Motor Show 2017 that kicked off Thursday in Kintex in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province.

Naver has been test-driving its autonomous car developed by its research and development subsidiary Naver Labs Corp. after becoming the nation’s first IT company to gain government permission to test a self-driving car on the road.

The car that the web portal giant has developed has the same automation capability with Level 3 vehicles based on the standards of the U.S. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) that defines six levels from 0 to 5 regarding driving automation. Level 3 means conditional automation with near self-driving capability that requires a human driver to take control only in emergency. It is the highest level among autonomous cars under development in Korea.

Built on deep-learning technology, Naver’s car is able to set directions and change lanes on its own by detecting objects and cars on the road with sensors and cameras.

Naver said it aims to develop Level 4 vehicles by analyzing data to be accumulated through the test driving. Level 4 and higher is regarded as full automation.

“We are stepping up our research and development efforts on autonomous cars based on Naver Labs’ superior visual recognition and deep-learning technology,” said Song Chang-hyun, chief technology officer of Naver.

Naver and Naver Labs showcased its self-driving car modified from Toyota Prius and its In-vehicle Infotainment (IVI) platform at the auto show.

IVI is a system that provides entertainment services such as music, movies and games and delivers information to drivers by connecting GPS navigator and smartphone. The system is controlled by voice commands. “IVI system boosts driving pleasure while ensuring safety at the same time,” said an official from Naver, adding that the company will enhance its competitiveness in developing IVI platform through partnership with other companies.
