South Korea¡¯s leading telecommunications company KT Corp. is accelerating its drive on artificial intelligence business through its IPTV platform GiGA Genie.

According to business sources on Sunday, KT chairman Hwang Chang-kyu ordered the company to come up with Genie service beyond the existing voice-activated speaker, while meanwhile concentrating on selling 500,000 units of GiGA Genie this year.

The future version will add web shopping and real-time portal search services to the current 15 voice-activated services such as TV, music, weather, and traffic information.

The future GiGA Genie will also be scalable which means the device can be commanded through a separate small speaker that can be attached anywhere at home like the bedroom, the kitchen or the bathroom, or a mobile device.

It will also be in sync with KT¡¯s webtoon service KTOON, allowing users to read comics on TV.

GiGA Genie will also be available with advanced conversation and cognitive technology that will recognize the owner and provide customized services. An anomaly detection function will be added.

¡°The system¡¯s conversational skills will also be upgraded to make it respond to everyday conversation and understand the context as well as the speaker`s intentions to communicate like a real person," said Baek Gyu-tae, head of the service research center at KT.
