Korea South-East Power Co. has completed South Korea’s first commercial offshore wind power farm in the southern island of Jeju, upping the chances of taking its renewable energy business abroad.

The Korean power company said on Friday it completed 10 offshore wind turbines capable of generating 30 megawatts (MW) combined in the western coast of Jeju Island. The plant would generate 85,000 megawatt hours of electricity a year, enough to power 24,000 households on the island.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. was in charge of building the turbines while Korea South-East Power handled designing and management.

Started in 2015, the construction was completed in September and underwent a two-month test run.

With the latest wind farm, Korea has emerged as the world’s ninth biggest offshore wind power country, the company said. Its cumulative installed electricity generation capacity from offshore wind power is now 35MW, including 5MW for existing research and development purposes.

Korea South-East Power said it has acquired the necessary credentials to venture overseas and expressed its ambition to become a major wind turbine supplier.
