S. Korean shipyards top global rank in July order backlog

South Korea¡¯s top three shipbuilders Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. remained as the top three shipyards in the global backlog scoreboard in July.

According to a report released by the U.K.-based industry monitor Clarkson Research Services Ltd. on Friday, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering had the largest shipbuilding orders of 82 vessels worth 5,964,000 compensated gross tons (CGTs) in its backlog as of July 31. Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) ranked the second with 69 ships worth 3,331,000 CGTs and Samsung Heavy Industries the third with 60 ships worth 3,039,000 CGTs.

The three Korean shipyards were trailed by China¡¯s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. with 51 ships worth 2,204,000 CGTs and Japan¡¯s Imabari Shipbuilding Co. with 30 ships worth 1,835,000 CGTs.

Korea¡¯s other big name shipyards took few steps down the ladder compared to the previous month. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., affiliate of HHI, had 38 ships worth 1,443,000 CGTs in its backlog and moved down three steps to the ninth. Another HHI affiliate Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. ranked the 10th, down by one compared to the previous month, with 65 ships worth 1,399,000 CGTs.

Both of them are chased closely by France¡¯s STX France that had 8 ships worth 1,262,000 CGTs in July backlog and Finland¡¯s Meyer Turku with 8 ships worth 1,237,000 CGTs.
