Leading display maker LG Display Co. has successfully developed a 77-inch flexible and transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel for the first time in the world, under a joint project with the government.

The Korean panel maker unveiled the world’s first flexible and transparent OLED panels on Thursday during a meeting held to showcase its achievements in the flexible display development in Korea. The national project was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology and LG Display over the past 59 months.

The company’s new 77-inch flexible OLED display comes in a 40 percent transparency rate and 80mm radius of curvature. It also boasts an ultra-high definition (UHD) resolution and larger size of 77 inches than the original goal of making 60-inch panels, the company said.

The company developed an 18-inch flexible OLED panel in 2014 and a 55-inch transparent OLED panel with 40 percent transparency in 2016. It is the first time for LG Display or any of display makers across the world to succeed in producing a transparent OLED display that is also flexible.

“LG Display, opened the large-sized OLED TV market in 2013, has been leading the OLED industry and will continue to bring innovation to the market,” said LG Display’s senior vice president and chief technology officer Kang In-byung.

Shares of LG Display rose 0.27 percent to end at 36,500 won on Friday.
